A question that should be on the minds of Americans.  As the President and our law makers discuss the future of healthcare in our country we need to be informed on what this will really mean for us going into the future.

With greater than 60% of all bankruptcies being primarily caused by medical bills, we need to look at changing something.  The even sadder fact is that over 50% of those people were fully covered by health insurance.  The answer unfortunately is not in fixing who pays for your healthcare.

Since we now know that our current healthcare system is the leading cause of death in our country, would it make sense to keep that system the same and then give everyone access to it?  Giving those not having insurance access to a broken healthcare system still doesn’t address the problem that we are the sickest industrialized country in the world.

Do people die everyday because of the lack of health coverage in our country?  I am quite sure they do.  I also know however that many more people die everyday for doing exactly what they are told by this same system because they were fully covered by insurance.

The point of all of this is that covering everyone will fix one of the problems we deal with in healthcare but it won’t even put a dent in the overall improvment of our overall healthcare system.  Just like many people particularly those with political power, we still ignore the giant elephant in the room.

The only way things are going to improve in our country is if we overhaul the entire mindset behind our medical model.  When are you taught to goto the doctor in our country?  When you have a problem, symptom or sign of disease.  We wonder why our country spends $2.4 Trillion on healthcare and its because it is always more expensive to treat a condition than it is to prevent it.  The medical community is rewarded in this country for doing heroic things to save lives.  Would it be in the best financial interest of your cardiologist to teach you what you need to do to not get heart disease or wait a while and put in a few $5,000 stents, that are not clinically proven to do much for you?  Better yet let’s wait to do open heart surgery now we are talking real money.  Studies have been done that prove you can reverse and so obviously prevent heart disease from happening.  Since it is the number cause of death by a disease, it might be a good idea to do more investigation.

If I could try to blame two things for our health crisis in America, it would be that we are taught to go to the doctor when we have symptoms only and the fact that there is no money in it for the doctors if they don’t have sick suffering individuals.  Think about it.  Your town or city has a Maximized Living Doctor on every corner in place of the Walgreens, Rite Aide or any number of other pharmacies that seem to be on every corner in my city.  People were taught the 5 Essential of good health and then we as a community took ownership of these principles.  As we improved our health what would become of the common medical doctor or pharmacy.  You guessed it they would get put out of business.  People in the business of providing true healthcare, not sick care disguised as healthcare, would flourish as our country climbed out of the basement and reached new potentials no one thought possible.

It can happen and will happen with Maximized Living leading the charge.  Our patients are our warriors and they help us in so many ways.  When people see those suffering needlessly, a simple recommendation can completely change their life.  I want to thank all of those that have helped us change our area one person at a time.  We live by a motto of “One More” because everyone can help one more person.  That one more person is someone’s father, mother, sister or brother and they deserve the right to know there is a better way.

So to answer the original question asked, “Would you vote for socialized medicine”, I would say by considering it we are wasting time ignoring the real problem at hand.  For those without health insurance, I am sure they would like it.  To be honest with you, 70% of my patients don’t use insurance in our office because even if they have “health” insurance it doesn’t cover our services.  Even if everyone is covered, if the policies stay they way they are now, they would only pay for disease care as they already do which means nothing changes.  I agree something needs to change but it is not as simple as just providing coverage for everyone.

Yesterday I received an e-mail from a colleague that reported Baxter Pharmaceuticals “accidentally” mixed live Bird Flu Virus in their regular flu vaccine.  Now the company reports that due to the proprietary secrets of manufacturing, it doesn’t need to disclose how this contamination occurred.  I have a hunch as to how this might have occurred, please hear me out on this.

A couple of years ago we heard all kinds of things in the news about the potential bird flu pandemic.  This flu was said to have the potential to completely devastate our world.  Records of human infection with the bird flu have been kept by the World Health Organization (WHO) since 2003.  Again, because of the intense media coverage, one would be led to believe these numbers must be huge.  Well, of the 6.7 Billion people in the world as of July 2008 there were a total of 412 cases recorded from 2003-March 2009.  That’s  world-wide mind you.  This is .00000006149% of the population over a 6+ year period or .00000000983% of the people per year.  Wow! No wonder there was such a scramble by the drug companies to get a bird flu vaccine to market! Could you imagine the global devastation of infecting 66 people a year? They also neglected to point out that 99% of the people infected by this virus were in direct contact with the infected animals.  According to the CDC it is extremely rare for humans to contract the disease, as we have shown above, but it is almost unheard of for the disease to pass from person to person.  So you might start saying to yourself, ‘What was all the hype about?’

Drug companies for years have thrived on a concept known as disease mongering;  a concept using fear and other avenues to widen the scope of disease often turning normal things into diseases.  For example, shyness may be thought to be a normal personality trait for a specific individual and quite frankly probably welcomed by school teachers.  It would seem wrong to give a child a controlled substance for shyness, however, if you called it “social anxiety disorder” you could scare a parent into believing that there is something terribly wrong with your child and justify a potent brain-chemistry altering drug.  These same techniques were used in the Bird Flu incident and much to the dismay of the drug companies who spent millions  developing a vaccine for it, the fear has died.  Now these companies have a product with big investment and no big customers to buy it.

Now comes the whole purpose of writing this post.  A couple of weeks ago it was reported that Baxter Pharmaceutical sent some common flu vaccine out to 18 countries.  One of them was the Czech Republic who tested the shot on ferrets.  All the ferrets died as a result of the inoculation.  Researchers confirmed that there was an unidentified viral strain in the shot.  It turns out is was the BIRD FLU virus and it was ALIVE! Can you imagine a company creating their own need by purposely infecting people with the disease that they happen to have a new blockbuster vaccine for?  I wonder if you are as sick to your stomach as I am about this.  Of course the very minimal information that has been released by the company states that there must have been some cross contamination, which could just be something that happens due to their “process”.  They also don’t feel compelled to address this issue and state that their process is a proprietary secret and therefore they will not disclose anything more about it.

Realize from a pure business stand point, this was probably looked at as great plan to make sure they would be able to sell some of the poison they have been producing.  Is should also be noted that in the 412 cases in the last 7 years 256 of those people died from it.  That is 62% mortality rate.  Can you imagine purposely infecting millions of people with a virus which can create that amount of devastation, all so you can recover some of the money you spent on research and development?  I have a better idea!  Don’t make a vaccine for a problem that is not real and if you do and it doesn’t work out, chalk it up to a bad business decision. Take your losses and move on.
