What Role Should Chiropractic Play In My Life?

March 12th, 2009

Last night I was asked a question by a newer patient of mine.  She said, “What should I expect from being at your office?”  I told her that although that is unique to every patient that walks through our door, it is all based on basic principals of health and healing.  People everyday have different health issues that they deal with from physical pain, emotional trauma and stress to organ dysfunction, disease and premature death and all these are dealt with following the 5 essentials of Maximized Living.

What you should expect from receiving care at our office is your body performing at its absolute best.  I then asked her if she thought her body wanted to be healthy or a sick suffering organism taking many medications and literally dying prematurely.  She answered, “healthy.”  Earlier that day I found two great articles that I thought would answer her question.

The first was published in the Medical Times in 1921 by a doctor Henry Windsor, MD.  The purpose of the study to prove or disprove whether minor abnormal curvatures in the spine were able to compress the chord/nerves enough to cause visceral disease to the organs that were inervated by that nerves sympathetic distribution.  In laymans terms, can a misalignment of the spine, a subluxation, cause organ disease?

Dr. Windsor took 50 Cadavers and dissected them to determine which organs if any developed disease processes.  Upon examination he determined there to be 139 diseased organs in the 50 subjects.  Tracing the sympathetic nerve distribution he concluded that 139 out of 139 diseased organs came from the parts fo the spine that had abnormal curvature changing the neurology.  WOW a 100% finding!  People that’s more than just random correlation, that’s direct causation.  So could that abnormal curvature, subluxation or degenerated spinal area cause disease to any organ it inervates?  You bet and how often?  EVERY SINGLE TIME!

The next article I came across was published by the Texas Chiropractic Association in 1978.  It looked back at statistical data from the great flu epidemic in 1917-18.  They found that in Davenport Iowa, which was the fountain head of chiropractic,  that there were 4,953 cases of flu treated by 50 medical doctors with 274 reported deaths.  In the same period 150 chiropractors including students and staff at the Palmer School of Chiropractic treated 1,635 with only one death.  In the state of Iowa the medical community had a death to case ratio of 1 out of 15.  In the restof the state of Iowa those seeking chiropractic had a 1 out of 789 death to case ratio.  WOW!

In New York City, for ever 10,000 cases treated by medicine 950 deaths were reported.  In every 10,000 cases of pneumonia treated by medicine, 6,400 died.  That is a amazing 9.5% and 64% of people dieing respectively.  In the same epidemic under drugless methods 25 died of flu for every 10,000 and 100 died of pneumonia our of 10,000 for a total of .25% and 1% respectively.  You read that correctly!

So when asked about what role chiropractic should play in your life, its a matter of life or death to me.  You can question principals but you can not disprove them.  As these two articles show, without a proper functioning Nervous System, you will be susceptible to organ disease and premature death as well as death from communicable diseases like flu and pneumonia.  If you have not been checked to see how well your nervous system is functioning, how will you know healthy you really are?
